What to Wear to a Doctor's Appointment
Whether you aren’t feeling well or you’re going in for a checkup, you may be wondering what to wear to a doctor’s appointment.
I had a friend you used to get completely decked out on days she had to go to a doctor’s appointment. While it’s nice she wanted to impress the doctor, it’s not practical.
Additionally, doctor is there to care for your body and wellness, not scope out what you have on.
In fact, Laurel Garaghty, M.D., was recently interviewed for Women’sHealth and here’s what she had to say,
"I've noticed more women are showing up in my clinic with fresh blowouts, manicures, and shaved or waxed body parts—and if they feel they appear in any way unkempt, they actually apologize to me, their doctor.
"I'm busy searching for skin cancers, yet patients have taken the trouble to impeccably groom and even wear coordinated, lacy—occasionally racy—underwear under their exam gowns.”
What to Wear to A Doctor’s Appointment
Here are some things to consider when visiting the doctor and will help you get in and out of the appointment as quickly as possible.
Clothes
You may be asked to disrobe or change into a gown, so wear clothes that are easy to take on and off.
You don’t need to be dressed up. In fact, if you have on a cumbersome outfit it will take you longer to get your clothes off and on again.
Opt for clothes that you can slip out of and into quickly and comfortably.
Button down shirts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, casual dresses, skirts, jeans, pants, and athletic wear are all suitable attire to wear to a doctor’s appointment.
In addition, if they are going to be checking out a particular injury, giving you a shot, or taking blood, wear clothes that are easy to access.
For example, if you know you are giving blood samples or getting a shot in the arm, wear a short sleeve shirt or shirt with sleeves that may be rolled up.
Shoes
The same goes with shoes. There’s no need to wear heels to a doctor’s office.
In case you need to remove your shoes, opt for loafers, slides, slip-ons, sandals, chelsea boots, sneakers, or other shoes that are easy on/off.
Waiting Room
Depending on the office you go to, you may have to spend some time in the waiting room.
Opt for clothes that are comfortable and loose fitting for sitting an extended period of time.
Don’t forget hygiene
Unless you have an injury that keeps you from bathing, be sure to shower that day.
In addition, you’ll want to:
Wear clean clothes
Wash your face
Brush your teeth
Comb your hair
