What to Wear for Passport Photo

If you’re planning to travel abroad, one of the first things you’ll want to do is get a US Passport.

It can take up to 8 weeks to receive your passport, so it’s an important first step when you are making plans to leave the US. Here’s how to get or renew a US Passport.

So, if you’re a girl like me…the question that pops into my head right away is what do I wear for a passport photo?

The US Passport office has guidelines for what you can and can’t wear in the photo.

Since you will have your passport for 10 years, I’ve also compiled some dos and don’ts so that you get the best photo possible.

What to Wear for Passport Photos

Passport Photo Dos

  • Wear clothes you would normally wear (aka street clothes).

  • Choose a shirt or blouse in a one of your favorite colors that flatters your face.

  • Choose a crew neck, collared shirt, or even turtle neck so that some clothing appears in the photo.

  • Opt for solid colors and not patterns.

  • Wear small jewelry or necklaces that don’t distract for your face or cover your face.

  • Wear your hair down and styled.

  • Keep makeup natural.

  • Smile. A small natural smile is best!

Passport Photo Don’ts

  • Costumes and uniforms are not allowed.

  • Don’t wear white. Photos are taken against a white/off white background. If you wear white, you’ll have a floating head appearance.

  • Don’t wear low cut shirts, tank tops, or with spaghetti straps or you will appear naked. Photos are cropped so not much of your outfit will show.

  • Don’t wear hats, headbands, and scarves (unless for religious reasons).

  • No glasses.

Where to get Passport Photos Taken

The US Passport Office has rules and guidelines for photos. Don’t risk having your passport application get rejected because you didn’t know the guidelines. You can avoid that problem by going to a US Passport approved photo station. Choose from any of the locations listed below.
