Skin Care Routine for Those Over 50
As we age, our skin's needs evolve. If you're over 50, you might find that the skin care products you loved in your youth no longer provide the desired effects. You're not alone! With age, you might notice your skin becoming drier, or perhaps you're battling a combination skin type. Here's a guide to adapting your routine to better cater to mature skin, based on my personal experience.
Why Change Your Routine?
When you're over 50, skin care products designed for younger skin might not target the issues of aging, dryness, or combination skin effectively. As our skin matures, it requires different nutrients and care.
I've been using Elemis products, and if you're unfamiliar with them, they are a London-based skincare company. My introduction to Elemis came when I stumbled upon a skincare starter pack while shopping at Ulta. This pack offered trial-sized products, allowing me to test them without committing to full sizes, considering how pricey skincare can be. This trial turned out to be a game-changer. After falling in love with their products, I've been a loyal user for years and have genuinely noticed improvements in my skin.
My Personal Journey
Having been a lifeguard in my teens, used tanning booths in my 20s, and having battled with rosacea and fair skin, I realized that my skin has undergone quite a bit of wear and tear over the years. Many products left my skin red, raw, and irritated, leading to heightened frustration. However, I found solace in the Elemis product line.
One of my biggest pet peeves is washing my face at the sink. Contrary to those glamorous commercials where models splash water effortlessly onto their faces, the reality feels much different. The sensation of water trickling down my arms is far from refreshing for me. This discomfort has led me to skip washing my face on numerous nights. That was until I started using Elemis’s Cleansing Balm. There is no need to wet your face before using it. You rub it on and massage it all over your face and eyes while it melts off dirt and makeup. Then, with a warm washcloth, you wipe it off.
Let’s get into my nightly/daily cleansing routine!
Nightly Skincare Routine
Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm: Unlike conventional face washes that can be messy, this balm melts away makeup effortlessly. Simply apply a bit on your face, massage it in, and use a warm washcloth to wipe it all off.
Elemis Soothing Apricot Toner: After cleaning, I use this toner. I love spraying it directly on my face, then wiping it down with a cotton pad.
Elemis Pro-Collagen Renewal Serum: Just a few drops of this serum rejuvenate and firm up the skin, offering a quick-absorbing solution to fine lines and wrinkles.
Elemis Pro-Collagen Night Cream: A small amount of this night cream moisturizes effectively, leaving the skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated.
Elemis Eye Revive Mask: This mask, which feels like a spongy gel, is dabbed around the eyes to refresh and revitalize the delicate skin there.
Morning Skincare Routine
For mornings, especially if I'm in a rush, I sometimes reuse the cleansing balm. Following that:
Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Face Wash: Used in the shower, this provides a quick face cleanse, avoiding the eye area.
Elemis Soothing Apricot Toner: After cleaning, I use this toner. I love spraying it directly on my face, then wiping it down with a cotton pad.
Elemis Pro-Collagen Renewal Serum: Just a few drops (usually 4 or 5) of this serum rejuvenate and firm up the skin, offering a quick-absorbing solution to fine lines and wrinkles.
Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream with SPF 30: An essential addition, given the importance of SPF in protecting the skin from harmful UV rays.
Final Thoughts
Having a consistent skincare routine that addresses the specific needs of mature skin is crucial as we age. It's about finding what works for your skin and being consistent with it.
